In May 2006, Service Opportunities After 55 (SOAR) introduced their Nonprofit Management Consultant Group. Our SOAR Nonprofit Management Consulting Group is a team of highly skilled executives who have been trained to serve as consultants for local non-profit agencies and organizations. This project is part of
our menu of service programs –there is no charge.
Our SOAR Nonprofit Management Consulting Group volunteers are:

Carol Fischman, Nancy Bloom, Jeannette Himmelfarb, Irving Rothman,
Eugene Arcand, Meg Humphries, Barbara Marchilonis, Margot Lansing,
Richard Winters, Sam Pugach, Donald Katz, Mickey Aramati
The trainer is Carol Fain-Walters.
The executive volunteers are required to complete an extensive training prior to a consulting assignment with a nonprofit. The training includes comprehensive workshops in consulting skills, teamwork and team leadership, strategic planning, and board governance.
Upon successful completion of the training, teams of volunteer consultants work with their assigned nonprofit for a period of 3-6 months. Jan Latorre-Stiller, SOAR Director, believes “this is a valuable opportunity for nonprofits to address challenges or problems with the help of a group of trained, highly skilled and experienced volunteers”.
Why offer this service?
There are many nonprofits in the area who, due to lack of resources or other reasons, are struggling with challenges that seem overwhelming including:
- Strategic Planning
- Fiscal Management
- Organizational Development
- Staff Development
- Board Development
Agency staff is overextended and outside help is expensive. They would welcome the opportunity to engage a team of individuals who have the mature perspective
and skills to help with a specific project or issue.
In addition, we are fortunate to be located in an area with a wealth of talented
people where recent retirees are excited by the idea of using their professional
skills to serve as advisors in the nonprofit sector.
How does it work?
The SOAR Volunteer Consulting Group will be trained to work in teams of two
to three individuals. Currently, the Group consists of two attorneys; a human
services administrator; two professors, one in organizational behavior; two MBAs, one in Finance; a PhD in social policy, an entrepreneur and a communications consultant. (see profiles of the consultants)
Carol Fain Walters, MPA, who is an experienced consultant in organizational development, strategic planning, executive coaching and Board governance, has designed a curriculum using the case study method to train executives in the private sector to utilize their skills and experience to assist nonprofit organizations.
The curriculum includes the following comprehensive workshops:
Consulting Skills
Teamwork and Team Leadership
Strategic Planning
Board Governance
The Consulting Group will be able to advise small nonprofits on a broad range of issues confronting them. How do I learn more about the SOAR Consulting Group?
